2Lt Fred H Reed Jr was born on September 18, 1921, in Renovo, PA and was the son of Fred B and Helen H Reed. He grew up in South Renovo. He was married to Margaret Snyder.
Reed was the bombardier on a B-24J assigned to the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 493rd Bombardment Squadron. They were part of a five-plane formation that departed Pandaveswar India to bomb targets at Moulmein Burma. Five minutes after dropping their bombs the formation was jumped by eight to twelve Japanese fighters. During the attacks Reed’s plane collided with one of the other bombers in the formation causing both to crash into the Bay of Martaban, killing the crews. He was killed on October 22, 1944, at the age of 23, near Moulmein Burma when his plane collided with another plane, fell to the bottom of the ocean, and exploded.
Because his body was never recovered, he is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, manilla, Philippines.
